Blue cave and Vis Island

The islands of Dalmatia are meant to be explored from the seaside. The magnificent views from the sea and the feeling of freedom that you get from having your own boat and skipper for a day is a luxury and an experience that will no doubt leave a lasting, beautiful imprint.

The destination for this day trip is the islands of Bisevo and Vis. Our local skipper will pick you up in Stomorska at 8.00 and sail you to the island of Bisevo. The aim is to get here early for the magical wonder of the Blue Cave.

The Blue Cave is a water-logged sea cave located on the east side of the island. The cave is one of the best known natural beauty spots on the Adriatic with its glowing blue light.

First described and painted by Baron Eugen von Ransonet, the cave was originally accessible only by diving as it had one natural entrance below the sea level. Based on his suggestion, an artificial entrance large enough for small boats was built in 1884.

The natural entrance to the cave, located on its southern side, is said to resemble a vault on the ceiling of a grotto. It is through this submarine-like opening on the ceiling of the cave that sunlight gets in and creates an iridescent blue glowing effect all around the cave. As well, a stone bar, connecting two walls of the cave, is clearly visible just below the waterline, both in above-water photographs and in underwater photos.

After the Blue Cave, it’s time to sail to Vis Island, and on your way, the skipper will make sure to find you the perfect spot for a swim in an idyllic and secluded bay.

Of all the inhabited Croatian islands, Vis is the furthest from the mainland and the most enigmatic. It spent much of its recent history serving as a Yugoslav military base, cut off from foreign visitors from the 1950s right up until 1989. This isolation preserved the island from development.

In Vis, we will anchor up at Komiza, a small fishing village only 30 minutes of sailing from the Blue Cave. In Komiza, you will have plenty of time for lunch and to wander the streets and soak up the local atmosphere.

In the afternoon, the boat will sail you back to Solta, arriving in Stomorska around 17.00, just in time for a drink and snacks at the terrace.
